Well, it was an old lens. Though it's not too hard to clean off, I would suggest putting it on an old uv filter or something.

You actually put vaseline on the lens? I did that once and it didn't work out nearly as nicely as this!

Yup, The trick is to smear just a bit on the outside and work it toward the centre, leaving the middle clear for the most part, with maybe just a little residue. Try it on an old UV filter for fun. Or try a black shear scarf between a set of step-up rings for a similar effect.

I'll have to remember that! I have matte box with clear glass that I usually use for my funky experiments like these. I love shooting through scarves and nylon or pretty much anything. Never thought of putting it between a step-up ring, though. Beats a rubber band :p
